Flashlights & headlamps, exhaustively

The brightest light is almost never the right one

Every number here is a published manufacturer figure with its source named, or arithmetic you can redo yourself. We compile the specs, do the runtime and throw maths, and link everything. Start with the five below.

We show a live price when we have one and the words “Check price” when we do not. We never print a number we cannot currently verify.

Everyone in this category says they tested twenty lights. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we did instead: compiled the published ANSI FL 1 figures, computed runtime from cell capacity and throw from candela, and linked every source so you can check us. The full method, including every formula.

What makes this different

Every number has a source

Lumens, candela, runtime, weight, IP rating. Each figure links to the manufacturer document it came from, with the date we read it.

We publish the arithmetic

Runtime from cell capacity. Beam distance from candela. Cost to run. Every formula is on the methodology page so you can redo any number here.

Live prices, or none

A price renders only from the live layer with the date it was checked. When we do not have one, the button says Check price. We never print a stale figure.

Every page names a skip

Every pick has a buyer it is wrong for, and we say who. A page where everything is recommended is an advertisement.

Read these first

  • Lumens vs candela

The distinction that decides reach, with the conversion formula and a table of real published figures.

  • Flashlight runtime, computed

How runtime is defined, why thermal step-down happens, and the arithmetic to compute a real figure yourself.

  • How we pick

The reproducible arithmetic that replaces a test lab, and the claims we refuse to make.

  • The ANSI FL 1 standard, explained

What the ANSI/PLATO FL 1 standard specifies, measurement by measurement, and the self-reporting problem at its center.
